Miley Cyrus has proudly worn the title feminist — feminism is all about equality, after all — and lately she’s been using Instagram to highlight the rock side of feminism. She’s been reaching back into 90s Riot Grrrl mode and pulling out some nostalgic pics with messages we still need today.
First up is this pic of Kathleen Hanna, singer of the punk rock band Bikini Kill. Slut-shaming is something we’re still dealing with today — guys and girls are given double standards when it comes to sexuality, and guys can get away with sexual things that girls would get in trouble for. Taking this on, Kathleen wrote the word “SLUT” on her stomach and had a pre-selfie taken. Miley, who’s no stranger to slut-shaming, put this on Instagram with the note, “coolest ever.”
Then Miley shared this on Instagram, writing, “f**k yeah (that dudes face is epic) #girlsrule”.
If you want to learn more about Kathleen Hanna, Riot Grrrl and rock feminism, you ought to totally check out the documentary “The Punk Singer.” Here’s a quick trailer to give ya an idea of what it’s about:

Miley, meantime, has given some strong words on feminism. “I’m just about equality, period. It’s not like, I’m a woman, women should be in charge!” she said, taking down one of the negative (and inaccurate) stereotypes out there that feminism is trying to oppress men. “I just want there to be equality for everybody.”
That sounds like a message Kathleen would approve of!
We Are the XX
We are the XX is redefining feminism, and yeah, guys can be feminists too!
