I LOVE SURPRISES! Specifically, Beyoncé and her “Love On Top” performance, Nicki Minaj’s outfit and The Throne’s surprise performance of “Otis.” There was also that one time Bey whispered, “I have a surprise…” to the press on the red (black) carpet. Oh. You missed that? What about Nicki’s post-show performance? Say what! You missed that too?
+ Beyoncé makes the big announcement before the show.
Before she started her performance by announcing she wanted us to “feel the love that’s growing inside of me” and ending it with a drop of a mic and rub of the baby bump, King B quietly whispered the surprise announcement to the press during the MTV.com livestream!
But back to the performance–GURL, WERKED IT…with a baby in tow! In heels. While belting out a tune. If Bey can pull that off, I’ve got two words for the rest of us: Let’s Move.
+ Fan rushes stage to perform with Kanye and Jay-Z.
Go camera crew! Cameras were (mostly) quick to avoid any Lil’ Mama-style interruption. As was security who took this fan down.
Our take: But why? Does the dude not know that he doesn’t have to pull a Kanye on Kanye to be in the spotlight? Take it from Nicki Minaj–she got her start in YoungArts, a program of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.
+ Nicki Minaj performs “Super Bass” with Taylor Swift across the street.
The YoungArts alum not only stole the show during the black carpet (well, until Beyoncé got there at least), she ran across the street to steal the show at Taylor Swift’s Speak Now Tour stop at the Staples Center.
Earlier in the night, she became the third femcee to win Best Hip-Hop Video–Missy Elliott (for “Work It” and “Lose Control”) and, umm, Jennifer Lopez (for “I’m Real featuring Ja Rule”) have both previously won. Last month, Nicki became the first woman to make Forbes’ Cash Kings List.
+ Gift bags handed out backstage benefited World Food Program USA.
iPads, Louboutins and spa treatments were a no-show at this year’s VMAs. Instead, guess what made an appearance?
