They’ve got red carpets to attend and private jets to catch, but not before they get that homework done.
We love these star students because they understand that when your 15 minutes of fame is up -- okay, maybe it’s 15 years for at least one of these pop pupils -- you best have an education. Seriously saved by the bell, y’all.
So pay attention, class -- here’s Act’s Top 5 cram-worthy celebs who made the grade in 2011!
+ Emma Watson
Looks like playing Hogwarts’ hottest bookworm for ten years really did rub off on the lovely Emma Watson. The bewitching British star has decided to pack her backpack once again and return to Brown University -- the Ivy League college she first attended in 2009 before taking a break to pursue coursework closer to home at Oxford University and promote the final Harry Potter film. Hermione would be proud -- Accio Education!
+ Mary J. Blige
The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has nine Grammy Awards -- she’s the only artist to win in Pop, Rap, Gospel, and R&B -- and eight multiplatinum albums to decorate her trophy room, but there’s one thing Mary J. really wanted on her wall: a high school diploma. So the super-successful singer hit the books, got her GED AND recorded her tenth studio album (released this November). In typical Mary-does-it-all fashion, she’s not done yet. The articulate artist is also committed to getting a college degree and determined to bring her empowering education experience to disadvantaged women -- the Mary J. Blige and Steve Stoute Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now, or FFAWN, has already raised money for 25 full scholarships this year. No doubt this scholarly songstress really does work it 25/8 to inspire fans with her music and her mind.
+ Tyra Banks
Forget America’s Next Top Model – how about America’s Next Top Mogul? The tenacious catwalk queen, Vicky Secret’s angel and daytime diva clearly knows how to make it in Hollywood -- but she wants to bring her brand to the business world as well. So Tyra enrolled in Harvard Business School's Owner/President Management Program this year so she can be a fierce and fabulous entrepreneur, entertainer and dystopian YA author. Now that’s something to smize about.
+ Dakota Fanning
What’s better than playing an evil vampire queen in one of the biggest movie franchises of all time? Being crowned your high school Homecoming Queen at the same time. Super starlet Dakota stayed down-to-earth by attending, and cheerleading for, North Hollywood's Campbell Hall Episcopal High School despite blockbuster roles in War of the Worlds and the Twilight series. So when kids across the country were donning caps and gowns this past May, the fabulous Miss Fanning was right there with ‘em.
+ James Franco
Judd Apatow was spot-on when he cast a certain unknown actor as the lead role in his first big TV series back in 1999. James Franco is both a freak (anyone catch his tripped-out hosting of the Academy Awards? Or that ridic role on a daytime soap?) AND a geek. He’s earned an honors degree in English from UCLA and a MFA in writing from Columbia University, taken film classes at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and now he’s getting his Ph.D. in English from Yale. (Oh yeah, and he Plus he published a book of short stories and taught “Master Class: Editing James Franco...with James Franco.” WTF. The whacky actor is a real whiz kid -- and did we mention he’s totally from Planet of the Babes, as well?
