To many of us, mosquitoes are nothing more than pests -- but in 40% of the world, they are responsible for the death of over one million people per year. Today is World Malaria Day, a day to come together to raise awareness about this deadly disease that is both preventable and curable.

Today is World Malaria Day, a day for recognizing the global effort being made to put an end to the deadly disease that kills approximately one million people each year. And to think, the illness spreads like crazy through malaria-infected mosquitoes. Yup, a mosquito can cause THAT MUCH damage.

Many "American Idol" finalists who've fallen short of the crown have gone on to do big things. Need we say more than these two words: Jennifer Hudson? Prob not, but we will. Three other "Idol" alums worth noting: Season 5's Elliott Yamin, Season 6's Melinda Dolittle, and Season 7's Jason Castro are now using their voice off the "AI" stage and in Washington, D.C. to talk up American support for the fight against malaria to Congress with Malaria No More.

Just a month ago, Mandy Moore took a break from red carpets and music studios to deliver bed nets to Cameroon, where malaria is the top killer of children under five. At the UN's Social Good summit in NYC, I asked Mandy about her experience in Africa (watch the interview below) and got some quick tips on getting involved in the movement to kill malaria.

In a bid to draw attention toward malaria prevention, comedian Bobby Bottleservice asked for your best jokes aimed at the disease's sole carrier, the mosquito. Then came Mozzie the Mosquito, a human-sized insect with no sense of personal space (but very fetching velour leggings), who took time out from buzzing in peoples' ears in Times Square on Friday to pay a visit to Act's HQ. (No, we were not hallucinating; yes, we have photographic evidence.)
