Going through cancer treatment can be a scary and painful time. 9-year-old Kamryn Renfro shaved her head to support her friend, Delaney Clements, who has been going through chemotherapy — and then Kamryn found herself suspended from school.
Zoe Saldana isn’t the only one shaking her head about this. She Tweeted:
9-Year-Old Banned in U.S. School for Shaving Head for Friend Suffering from Cancer. Would you do something like this? http://t.co/osem6y17l4— Zoe Saldana (@zoesaldana) March 27, 2014
As CBS explains, Kamryn was punished because shaving her head was a violation of the school’s dress code. There was an uproar, and then the school’s board of directors voted 3-1 to let her back in.
“I did it so [my friend Delaney] didn’t have to feel left out,” Kamryn explained about shaving her head.
Many people are upset with the school’s initial reaction and are taking Kamryn’s side. But her mom, Jamie Olson Renfro, says the person we really should all be thinking about and supporting is Delaney. “Delaney is still in the fight of her life, and needs as much love, support and prayers as she can get,” she explained.
Delaney started her battle against cancer several years ago, and she said, “It feels good to have my friends be there for me and to know I am not alone.” And all this proves that she is definitely not alone, and that many people care.
Kamryn isn’t the first person to shave her head as a way of support a loved one with cancer. Kellie Pickler and Lady Gaga are two celebs who have famously done the same thing. As they say, you know who your true friends are in times of hardship.
