Last night Twitter went wild as people were glued to the news and announcements on winners were made. Learning that Barack Obama had been reelected as president of the United States was the biggest Twitter trend of the night and in Twitter history, but there was also a lot of talk about women and politics, and Sophia Bush had good news to share!
The “Partners” actress Tweeted:
Tammy Duckworth, who lost both of her legs in Iraq, won her bid to be an Illinois congresswoman. Showing that physical disabilities won’t hold her back has made her an inspiration to countless people.
Another Tammy, Tammy Baldwin, was elected by the people of Wisconsin to be part of the Senate. This is especially a big deal because Baldwin will be the first openly gay politician to be a Senator. We’ve had other gay political leaders, but none have gotten this far.
If we move over to Hawaii, we see that Mazie Hirono won her bid for a Senate seat and will be the first Asian-American woman in the Senate. Like Baldwin, she’s also the first woman elected to the Senate by her state. Let’s give these ladies a hand!
Numbers are still being counted, but there will be at least 19 women in the new Senate. That’s still a minority, so there are plenty of strides to make, but the good news is that this is the largest number of women yet in the Senate. Sophia is often Tweeting about women’s rights, and she’s far from the only one thrilled to celebrate this great news! Let’s continue to get it, gurls!
Help get more young women involved in politics.
Take action to help empower young women today to be the female powerhouses of tomorrow.
