In school, we all get taught about Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves -- but the truth is slavery still goes on in our own backyard. The Ricky Martin Foundation is serious about stopping human trafficking, and Ricky was thrilled to see President Obama take a strong and proactive stand during a recent appearance.
President Obama appeared at the Clinton Global Initiative, and used his appearance to lay out his vision and plan on tackling human trafficking. “It ought to concern every person, because it’s a debasement of our common humanity,” he said. “It ought to concern every community, because it tears at the social fabric. It ought to concern every business, because it distorts markets. It ought to concern every nation, because it endangers public health and fuels violence and organized crime. I’m talking about the injustice, the outrage, of human trafficking, which must be called by its true name -- modern slavery.”
Human trafficking is all around us, but so many of us don’t know much about it. It happens all around the world and in all different countries, including our own. Human trafficking is a subject that frequently makes Ricky's Twitter feed, because he knows that first people need to know about it and understand it so they can add to the fight against it. “My dream right now is seeing the abolition of modern day slavery, and human trafficking,” Ricky recently tweeted.
