Mark Ruffalo might turn into the Hulk in “The Avengers,” but on Twitter the actor and activist is much more mild-mannered. He often uses his Twitter account to talk about things like environmentalism and women’s rights, and yesterday he used Twitter to spread news on what’s going on in Russia.

Mark Tweeted:

Every member of Russia’s parliament approved a new amnesty, and Pussy Riot and environmental activists from Greenpeace are on the release list, along with thousands of other prisoners.

The Russian government has been under increased pressure from international sources to release many of its prisoners. Pussy Riot, for instance, was imprisoned for singing a protest song against Russian President Putin. Greenpeace activists got in legal trouble for protesting offshore drilling. Their protests may have been nonviolent, but they still had the book thrown at them.

Mark is glad to see progress, but many people are still upset over Russia’s anti-LGBTQ laws. In many places in the world, LGBTQ rights are progressing (in the United States, New Mexico just became the 17th state to make same-sex marriage legal), but in Russia, you can face legal trouble just for talking about LGBTQ issues. This is putting a real strain on the forthcoming Winter Olympics, and there’s worry about how LGBTQ athletes and tourists will be treated while in the country.

There is still time for things to change in Russia, and this new amnesty might be a bright new step forward. Mark and millions of others (including us!) will be watching to see what happens.
