Love it or hate it, fruitcake is a pretty standard food item this time of year. Kristen Bell has stumbled across a way you can make fruitcake to save the lives of dogs and cats. It’s true!

If you go to the website, it explains, “For a donation of just $15, you’ll be invited to select from dozens of ingredients to create your dream fruitcake along with people from all over the US. Your ingredients will be added to the mix, along with everyone else’s, to create a truly unique end result that we could only make with your help.” Who gets the fruitcake? You can send it to a friend or family member, or you can have it for yourself. Just let them know, and it’ll be shipped out.
The $15 donated goes to two different animal welfare places: Happy Hound Rescue in Minnesota and Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter in Montana. Even though it’s called Happy Hound Rescue, HHR will help dogs of all types, and it rescues shelter dogs who are at risk of being put to sleep. Happy Hound Rescue will save the dogs from euthanasia, get them the medication and care they need, and get them adopted.
Meanwhile, Heart of the Valley is a shelter that accepts all dogs and cats doesn’t kill animals who aren’t adopted right away. But in order to keep up their work, they need these donations. Whether or not you think fruitcake is tasty is up to you, but helping animals in need is always a great way to go.
