Royalty donned this rich dye ‘cause commoners couldn’t afford to rock it. The hazy hue made Jimi Hendrix want to kiss the sky. Prince’s was all about passionate precipitation. And Alice Walker used the shade to paint a poignant portrait of strong Southern black women.
Purple certainly has a long history of popping up at the vibrant intersection of pop and politics – and this week, you can show you’re a king or queen of care flair by sporting the compassionate color in honor of two important causes from our generation.
This Thursday, October 20th put on your purple for Spirit Day, a tradition started last October by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan who wanted to honor the lives lost due to the bullying of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth.
In the rainbow pride flag, purple represents “spirit” as well as hope and resilience -- so when schools, organizations, corporations, celebs and people like you wear it this week, it sends a color-coded message of solidarity and support to thousands of kids who are unfairly harassed because of their sexuality.
We’ve already given you the heads up that you’ll be joined in this mega-mauve movement by Vinny Guadagnino, Chaz Bono, Rashida Jones, Amy Poehler, Naya Rivera -- plus many more conscientious celebs – who spoke up in recent PSA's for the Amplify Your Voice campaign with GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation).
And if you’re down for a double-duty purple protest, consider that when you go lavender to show your love on Spirit Day, you’ll be sending a signal to the 1% as well. The LA Times reported that one of the 99% suggested, “that the Occupy Wall Street adopt purple as its color, because that's what you get by mixing red, white and blue. "We're not anti-American, we're ultra-American.”
Maybe the next time Kanye West, Russell Simmons, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco and Penn Badgley show up at Zuccotti Park, they’ll be sporting some purple digs?
So whether you go full Barney with head-to-toe violet, slap on your fav wine-colored watch or simply change your avatar to a purple pop culture reference – this is your chance to make a fashion statement that really counts.
