We’re going to do something a little different for Selfless Snaps today, mmmkay? Normally we cover a celeb Tweeting or Instagramming a picture of themselves doing a good deed, but today, in honor of Nelson Mandela, we want YOU to share pics of your good deeds.
You might have noticed #67minutes trending on Twitter today. In 2009, the United Nations turned July 18 into Nelson Mandela International Day, and the point of the day is to ask people to give 67 minutes helping another. This number was picked because Mandela spent 67 years of his life in public service.
So while today isn’t July 18, many people are calling on us to spend 67 minutes doing charitable actions to honor the memory of Nelson Mandela. The type of action is really up to you. You might want to pursue an action that Mandela was personally passionate about, like taking a stand against racism or fighting HIV/AIDS. The man himself said, “To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.” Or maybe instead of concentrating on human rights, you want to work on animal rights or something to help the environment. It’s really up to you.
Whatever you decide to do, we totally encourage you to share with us! We’d love to see your pics on social media, and please include the hashtag #67minutes. To learn more about Nelson Mandela and why his legacy matters so much, check out 5 Ways Nelson Mandela Changed the World.
