2013 was the year where it was awesome to be Macklemore. We’re not just biased because he won Best Video With a Social Message at the VMAs — he also impressed the hip-hop magazine The Source, who named him Man of the Year.
The Source explained why Macklemore was chosen, saying: “His now platinum-selling Grammy nominated album, The Heist, spawned several hit songs that sold a combined 13 million (and counting) units. The banner single ‘Same Love’ was named both ‘Best Hip Hop Video’ and ‘Best Video With a Social Message’ at the MTV VMA’s. … For us at The Source, his personal integrity and rap skills made him our choice for 2013 Man Of The Year.”
Sounds good! And we know about Macklemore’s integrity — in an exclusive interview with MTV Act, he spoke about his inspiration for writing “Same Love,” saying, “You can only watch injustice go on for so long until you’re compelled to say something. To speak out against it. I read an article about a 13-year-old kid who committed suicide because he was ridiculed at school over being gay. That was it. I had to say something.”
Macklemore shared his pretty impressive cover on Instagram:
Then Macklemore showed that in addition to laying down the rhymes in his music, he’s not bad at drawing. He used Instagram to share a stylized drawing of Abraham Lincoln, writing, “My drawing of presidente Lincoln”.
Maybe winning Man of the Year — and realizing his lyrics have inspired millions — lead him to drawing a picture of someone he finds super-inspirational?
