December 14 is the one year anniversary of the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-six people — 20 students and six adults — tragically lost their lives that day. For this solemn occasion, we have put together a list of ways to give back and show support to those who lost loved ones.
+ Sign the Petition
Causes.com has put together a non-partisan, non-political petition to share your condolences. About 80,000 people have signed, and you can add your name to let people affected by the tragedy know that you’re thinking about them and you care.
+ Sandy Hook Promise
Check out Sandy Hook Promise. You can learn more about the grassroots org and sign a pledge online to help prevent future violence. They also sell merchandise — anything from T-shirts to OPI nail polish, and the money goes to help the Newtown community.
+ Tweet #SandyHook
You can also share your condolences on social media and use the hashtag #SandyHook. A sample Tweet could be something like: “Everyone affected a year ago today is in my heart. #SandyHook.” Want to pay it forward even more? Many people are performing good deeds on December 14 in tribute to all the victims.
+ Newtown Memorial Fund
Donations to the Newtown Memorial Fund are always welcome. Through them you can donate to families directly impacted, and the site explains, “This includes (but not limited to) replacing lost wages due to an inability to return to work after December 14th, help with counseling services for family members, and other expenses that will arise in the coming years as people attempt to put their lives back together.” You can also donate to their Physical Memorial Fund, which is building memorials to those who died.
