February 14th isn’t just about hearts and chocolates — it’s about more than a billion people rising for V-Day to demand an end to gender violence.
1 in 3 women will be physically or sexually assaulted during her lifetime, and that is not OK. Last year MTV Act brought you the deets on the One Billion Rising campaign, and this year we’re here to tell you it’s back and better than ever.
One Billion Rising for Justice asks you to step out today and take a stand for women’s rights. Here are some ideas on how you can do it:
+ Find an Event
There are events going on in cities all over the world! See if there’s one near you that you can join!
+ Share the Word!
The One Billion Rising site has lots of ways to help you with this —including downloadable “One Billion Rising for Justice” logos, postcards and T-shirts! You can also change your profile pics on social media. If you’re on Twitter, you can use the hashtags #rise4justice and #reasontorise while letting people know why this day matters.
+ Day of Action
Take action today on a women’s issue that matters to you. Write to your legislators, volunteer at a women’s shelter or write a blog post about why equality is needed. You name it!
One Billion Rising explains that “we cannot end violence against women without ending all intersecting forms of oppression and injustice: poverty, racism, homophobia, war, the plunder of the environment, capitalism, imperialism, and patriarchy.” So it’s involved with other interconnected issues as well, like taking better care of the environment. Check out why these other issues matter for women’s rights and how you can help.
