constituent (noun): a voter within a congressional district
-- defined, of course, in the political sense. Broadly speaking, however, constituents are parts of a whole. We are the stakeholders, shareholders, clients, beneficiaries and, yes, voters. We are the people empowered to make decisions. We are the ones who've got to live with the choices that -- we -- collectively make.
Digging down to its etymology (the history of a word), you'll note that "constituent" is in the same family as "constitute," a verb that means "to be part of a whole." If those two are cousins, then brace yourself to meet their great-grandfather, the ever-wise... drumroll please... Constitution, an ideological cake baked from all those legal ingredients that constitute America. BOOM!
If you are eligible to vote, you are a constituent in your ward, your district, your county, your state, your country. You are the target market for those increasingly kooky campaign commercials, superhuman debate promises and visions for the future -- the essentials constituting a classic campaign.
