Beyoncé runs the world yet again after releasing her self-titled fifth studio album. It kinda just appeared outta nowhere, the singer opting to drop it with no formal press or announcement.
The epic song and video compilation explores a lot of deep themes Bey hasn’t before, including the lengths some women go to in order to feel beautiful.
In “Pretty Hurts,” Beyoncé imagines her life as a pageant queen — one whose mother raised her to believe being good-looking is “all that matters”:
“Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever’s worse,” she sings. “Perfection is a disease of a nation.”
“Pretty Hurts” is such a beautiful song with such a beautiful message, and we’re happy to see so many young people taking it to heart and making it their own:
