If you’re a fan of “The Hunger Games” series, you know very well that the odds are never in Katniss Everdeen’s favor. When their children aren’t being forced to fight to the death in a televised competition, the citizens of Panem’s outlying districts are often left to starve to death while the fashion-obsessed citizens of the Capitol eat more than their fill night after night.
The media campaigns surrounding “Catching Fire,” the latest installment in the series, seem to distract from the larger picture, however. If you’ve watched previews of the film or seen ads promoting products that tie in to the series, you’re more likely to be dazzled by the impressive fashion and flashy products than to be confronted with the gritty issues the books address.
Andrew Slack is determined to shift the spotlight back to the issue of income inequality. He’s the executive director of The Harry Potter Alliance, a nonprofit organization “inspired by the power of story to create social change.” Hoping to mobilize the series’ huge following, the organization recently launched its Odds in Our Favor campaign to educate fans about the realities of income inequality in the world today.
In the first week of the campaign, thousands of fans around the country participated to turn the odds back in their favor. Want to take a stand against the resistance? Here’s how you can get involved in the campaign:
+ Watch “The Hunger Games Are Real”
In its new video, “The Hunger Games Are Real,” The Harry Potter Alliance educates fans about just how blurred the line between fact and fiction really is when it comes to income inequality. Watch the video to find out more about the connection between the futuristic world of Panem and the America we live in today.
+ Discover “We Are the Districts”
The Harry Potter Alliance created a collaborative Tumblr blog to educate and highlight volunteer work being done to “address the twelve districts of economic inequality.” Discover We Are the Districts and see how users around the country are tackling access to healthcare, homelessness, voting access, unemployment, and more!
+ Give the Three Finger Salute
In the series, citizens give the three finger salute as a show of resistance against the Capitol. Thanks to the new Odds in Our Favor website, you can join hundreds of others who are showing what they think about income inequality in America. Post a photo of yourself giving the salute then share it any time you see advertisements for the movie or hear someone talking about it on social media channels.
Tackling big issues is nothing new to the Harry Potter Alliance. In the last eight years, the alliance has galvanized fans of different books, movies, and TV shows to “advocate for important causes that relate to the stories they love.” The organization has sent “five cargo planes to Haiti, built libraries across the world, and funded the protection of thousands of civilians in Darfur and Burma.”
