Stephen Colbert is known for his quick wit and satirical approach to the issues. While he’s not always serious, the things he talks about usually are. He recently took to Twitter to make a statement about gun legislation in North Carolina that could have a serious impact on everyone’s safety.
North Carolina is planning to legalize guns on playgrounds and in bars–two places where nobody ever gets in fights!
— Stephen Colbert (@StephenAtHome) July 25, 2013
The controversial bill has passed both the House and the Senate, which means it’s on its way to the governor. The bill would allow people with concealed carry permits to bring their guns to restaurants and bars, unless the owner says they’d like it otherwise. They’d also be able to take their guns with them to playgrounds and other public places.
With any kind of gun measure, there will be people for and against this. (Real Stephen is probably against it, while character Stephen probably loves it.) However you feel about it, it’s important to let your voice be heard, especially if you’re a resident of North Carolina. You can contact the governor to let him know if you agree or disagree, and contact your House and Senate members to say whether you approved or disapproved of their vote.
Even if you’re not a resident of North Carolina, there are plenty of opportunities to speak out about gun issues. MTV Act has its own page on gun safety, which can help you get info on gun facts, as opposed to gun rhetoric. It also helps you get set up to contact your representatives so you can share your thoughts. Because you get to decide if guns are allowed.
