The Westboro Baptist Church is best known for its extreme homophobia, offensive signs and the fact it makes the point to picket funerals. A few years back when I attended a funeral for a soldier killed in Afghanistan, members of the church were there with their notorious signs. It was terrible.
Hearing that she’s on their list, Lorde said in a series of since deleted tweets: “hahaha omg just found out westboro baptist church are going to picket my show in kansas city,” and “everyone wear rainbow clothing to that show.” She went further by encouraging her fans to take action, “everyone try to kiss church members who are same sex as you they will so love it christmas comin early in kansas city~??????”
The WBC isn’t just in the news because of its protest of Lorde — it has also been gathering big headlines because its founder, Fred Phelps, is allegedly on his deathbed. Even if Phelps dies, though, it will not be the end of the picketing and the hate from this group — it plans to continue what it’s been doing.
But why has Lorde earned the group’s ire? Apparently it’s because of her support for LBGTQ rights. After an interviewer was asking Lorde about her relationship with Taylor Swift and talked about women being “Ellen together,” the singer replied, “What do you mean you’re not talking about ‘Ellen together’? Is there something wrong with lesbians? Is that what you’re trying to say?” She wasn’t going to put up with that sort of stuff!
