Macklemore recently spoke with mtvU and The Jed Foundation’s Half of Us about his struggles with overcoming addiction, and now the heartfelt singer has an exclusive clip with MTV Act about dealing with stress in 2013.
“It’s been a tough year in terms of just wanting to escape,” he said. “I think that I’ll always have that. I think that that comes back to the addict in me wanting to get out of my own head, wanting to not deal with the stress, wanting to just turn off, like, the go-go-go-go-go and just escape.”
If someone is addicted to a substance, it isn’t as easy as saying “just quit” or expecting a person to get over it. “I still struggle,” Macklemore said, showing that if you’re struggling, you’re not alone. “I think that I always will still struggle with desiring that [escape].”
He continued, “There is pressure in this industry. There’s pressure in life. I mean, take away from this industry … there’s pressure in life. Anybody that walks this earth, there’s different pressure, there’s different expectation. It might come in a different form. It might be more intense at times. But, you know … I had this same desire to escape when I was 16 years old.”
If you or someone you know is struggling, there is help available. Macklemore said himself that it was professional help that got him through. There are always different resources available if a substance has taken over your life or the life of someone you care about, and we encourage you to reach out if what Macklemore is talking about sounds familiar to you.
