The Motivational Edge is a nonprofit after-school program that’s seriously helping shape the lives of inner-city kids in Florida and giving a blueprint to help kids everywhere else. Sound good? It gets even better: It’s got Lil Wayne’s seal of approval.
Ian Welsch, the founder and CEO of Motivational Edge, was a school teacher who saw how budget cuts hurt education and that kids who would benefit from extra tutoring usually couldn’t afford it. The Motivational Edge helps kids have a creative outlet, and it also gives them aid with their studies. About 90% of their kids are at or above grade levels in terms of their reading and writing skills.
Right now the Motivational Edge has an indiegogo campaign and they’re trying to earn $200,000 in the next five days. Weezy, who’s shown his love for after-school programs with his involvement with Stoked, took part in a vid for this campaign.
“I’m here to tell you that I stand behind the mission of Motivational Edge,” Lil Wayne said. He supports the kids, because he used to be them and knows what it’s like. “I grew up in New Orleans in a neighborhood called Hollygrove, where I didn’t have a lot. A lot of other people didn’t have a lot. But what I did have was education and music. And me, I figured that if one wouldn’t get me out, the other one would. But then I finally learned I wouldn’t get out of anything without education. I personally donated to this cause, and now we need your help.”
