Lil Wayne is making headlines left and right this week. He has earned his fifth top 10 debut on the Billboard singles chart; he’s performing at this Sunday’s Video Music Awards at 9/8c on MTV; and, he’s dropping his long-awaited album Tha Carter IV right after the show. His video for “How To Love” is making headlines–and a statement–too.

In the video, Lil Wayne raps over the life of a young mother and her daughter, whom she decides to raise herself after backing out of an abortion. This is a big decision; it’s best for one to take their time and talk with their partner, their family and other trusted advisers. Remember, it’s all about timing: preventing pregnancy now can help you be the best parent you can be later in life, when you’re emotionally and financially ready. Most teen moms say they love their children but wish they’d waited 10 years. Babies are wonderful. They give a lot of love back, but they depend on you for everything.

In “How To Love,” Weezy illustrates two very different paths for the mother and daughter. In the first, the mother brings her baby into a broken home, and around physically and sexually abusive boyfriends; unlike the first, she leaves the relationship and moves in with her mother with her daughter’s future in mind for the second part. Moving forth, her daughter grows into a life reflective of each environment she was brought up in.

The video as whole speaks volumes–the video’s last line on its own gives chills: “Just thank you. Thank you for being there and teaching me how to love.” Let us know what you think of the video in the comments below.
