Jay Z knows how to court controversy, and, believe it or not, his latest controversy involved him giving more than a million dollars to charity.
You might be saying, “Whuh? But isn’t giving to charity always a good thing?” Welp, here’s the lowdown: Jay Z had hooked up with the store Barney’s to sell his A New York Holiday collection. His plan was to donate a quarter of his profits to his Shawn Carter Foundation, which has the mission to “help individuals facing socio-economic hardships further their education at institutions of higher learning.”
However, Barney’s has come under major fire after African-Americans shopping there were held by police. The customers had done absolutely nothing wrong, and there were accusations of racial profiling. Many people asked Jay Z to dump Barney’s in light of the allegations of racism, but Jay Z wrote, “I am in a unique position to use my voice to affect change to this disturbing issue. The easy position would have been to walk away and leave policy making to others hoping that someone addresses the problem. I will not leave the outcome to others. I will take this into my own hands with full power to recommend, review and revise policies and guidelines moving forward. I am choosing to take this head on.”
Jay Z’s collection has pulled in more than a million dollars, and in the end he decided to donate ALL the money to his charity. What’s going to happen with Barney’s has yet to be seen, and we want to ask: What would you have done if you were in Jay Z’s shoes?
