A lot has happened since announcing she’d be seeking treatment for an eating disorder back in November 2010. Demi Lovato has gone from struggling Disney starlet to matured singer selling out concert venues while on the road to recovery. Through it all, two words lend themselves perfectly to the message Demi hopes to pass along: stay strong.
In an hour-long special airing Tuesday (3/6) at 10/9c on MTV, Demi Lovato gives viewers full access to her life as she works towards a more positive, healthy lifestyle. In “Demi Lovato: Stay Strong“, Demi also returns to her treatment facility to talk to recovering peers and thank those who she says kept her alive.

Before tomorrow’s candid look into her road to recovery, we took a moment to chat with Demi Lovato on what she hopes you’ll take from the doc. Plus, every wonder who she listens to help her through difficult times? Yep, well she spilled those deets, too! Check out our full interview below:
Act: What kind of advice do you have then for girls who are maybe dealing with some of the things that you are dealing with?
Demi Lovato: Just be prepared for ups and downs. You know, the journey’s not going to be completely easy at the end of the day just don’t give up because the reward is so much greater than anything.
What’s your advice for people who are maybe also going through a bad day or something that’s difficult for them to deal with?
You know just keep your chin up and keep truckin’, you know. No matter what you’re going through, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and it may seem hard to get to it but you can do it and just keep working towards it and you’ll find the positive side of things.
Your music has helped others through difficult times that they have been through. Is there an artist that you listen to that helps you get through those difficult days?
Yeah, I listen to a lot of John Mayer and James Morrison. There are a lot of artists but those two artists I really, really feel and I listen to their songs and they kind of help pull me through no matter what I’m going through.
What are you hoping your fans take away from the special?
You know, I speak about a lot of serious issues and I really hope to raise awareness out there about the issues that I dealt with but at the end of the day I just want people to see what it’s like to be in my shoes. I talked about the journey that I’ve been on and I just want people to take away a positive message. It gets better, you know.
