Imagining the convo is enough to make most of us sweat profusely and look for the nearest exit. Birds, bees, bananas, and other awkward euphemisms might be used. Eyebrows might be raised, while your mom leans forward and frantically whispers “Well … are you being safe?” Or maybe you have one of those “don’t worry, I’m a cool mom” deals where she slips you a condom and winks. Either way, the scenarios playing out in your head definitely are cringe-worthy.
It doesn’t have to be this way though. First off, only you know when you’re ready. When it comes to your sex life, you are in charge. If you’re completely bugging out about taking the plunge, it might be a cue to slow things down with your significant other. If they really have your best interests at heart, it shouldn’t be a big deal, and if it is …. (refer to How To Break Up With an A-hole). Knowing the facts about preventing pregnancy and STDs including HIV, and talking to your partner about using protection (BEFORE you two are between the sheets) will also put your mind at ease.
