Two years ago the members of fun. got together with Rachel Antonoff to form The Ally Coalition, an LGBTQ rights org that everyone can get involved in. Now with this great news coming out of the UN, band member Jack Antonoff said, “We as musicians stand with the LGBT community in any way we possibly can. Together, we have the ability to make the world a freer and more equal place.” The band members in good company, too: Ricky Martin and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are all already part of this campaign.
If you go to the Free & Equal page you can learn more of what the UN has going on, and also learn some alarming stats, like the fact being gay can get you the death penalty in at least five countries. You can share facts like these on social media to get more people involved, because it shows them just how serious the fight for LGBTQ equality is.
When I interviewed Jack before, he spoke about his pride in being an ally in the movement for equality. “The movement stretches into so many different areas, and I think what we’re doing is representing the straight alliance,” he said. “We do exist, and there’s a lot of pride in that. I think it’s a vital part of the issue, and it’s a way to be directly effective.”
