How sweet would it be to have the ability to help others through something you love doing -- something you love as much as say…eating and shopping? We've got some fun and easy ways you can use your purchasing power to have a positive social impact, and they’re all about the power you hold as a shopper!
You’ve heard of flashmobs, and you’ve heard of The Mob, but have you heard of Carrotmob? Carrotmob is a type of consumer activism that empowers you to influence how socially responsible a business is.
Here’s how it works. Instead of organizing a boycott against a company, you can plan an anti-boycott with a group of friends for a company that promises to give back to its community, be more eco-friendly, or operate more sustainably. In other words, you dangle the carrot, the promise of spending a ton of money at an establishment, and then that business dedicates a percentage of those proceeds to keeping its promise. Check out this fun animation to see how it’s done.
At Roozt.com, you can purchase products from some of the coolest, cause-oriented brands available. The site showcases eco-savvy and ethical items that support communities and benefit humanity. Stylish men’s and women’s clothing, footwear, jewelry, and other accessories are all up for grabs. Plus, for every purchase that’s made, Roozt donates a percentage of profits to a monthly cause. Learn how to be a Roozter in the video below.
With the same social good spirit as Roozt.com, the site Socialvest encourages shoppers to purchase with purpose. When you join the online community, a percentage of everything you buy goes directly into a special account that you can use to donate money to the causes closest to your heart. Socialvest is partnered with more than 600 retailers including Target, Gap, and Macy’s, just to name a few, and 1.5 million charities. Investing is great for your future. Socialvesting is great for humankind.
And of course, for those of us who want to do good while we’re mobile, there are a few apps for that. One of our favorites is called the GoodGuide, which empowers people to shop responsibly while on the go. By scanning the barcode of a product on the app, consumers can see how healthy, socially responsible, and environmentally sound a product is. That’s quite a serving of valuable information right in the palm of your hand. Learn more in the vid below.
So these are just a few ways you can influence the businesses and the brands you love to change the world. Can spending $$ get any better than that?
