Stand Up For Paycheck Fairness On Equal Pay Day!

No joke: If a man made $100 in the 2013 calendar, it would have taken a woman until today — April 8, 2014, a whole three months and eight days longer — to get paid that same amount. Hence, today is Equal Pay Day.

Even though it’s 2014, a woman on average earns 77 cents to every dollar a man earns. Ridiculous. But there is a quick way you can let your politicians know that you believe that equal work deserves equal pay. The National Organization for Women (NOW) has hooked up with Democracy for America to make a petition asking Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. With a few clicks your name will be signed.

It might seem like a no-brainer and that, of course, Congress would want women paid the same as men. But, actually, that’s not the case. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), who is the ranking member on the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, has publicly stated that he is very much against this bill, and other politicians will be voting with him.

Today President Obama is signing two executive orders trying to get equal pay to women. But Huffington Post explains why the Paycheck Fairness Act is needed in addition to those orders, saying, “The bill would codify Obama’s two executive orders, which only apply to federal contractors, for most other employers. It would also strengthen penalties for equal pay violations and require employers to demonstrate that salary differences among male and female employees doing the same work are based on factors other than sex.”

Because do we really need another year where women have to work 15 months to get what a man makes in a year?
