+ Qualified Gay Workers Have Trouble Getting Hired
If you’re a member of the LGBTQ community or have worked for an LGBTQ org, does that make it harder for you to be hired? According to a study from Equal Rights Center and Freedom to Work, yes. The study used fake résumés for its test — an LGBTQ résumé that was stronger and a non-LGBTQ résumé that wasn’t as strong. The LGBTQ applicants (who, again, were better qualified!) were almost 25% less likely to be called in for a job interview.
+ Crohn’s Disease Selfies
Can selfies help end stigmas and make the world a better place? Damn straight! 23-year-old Bethany Townsend, who has Crohn’s disease, released a pic of her sunbathing with her colostomy bag in perfect view. Oftentimes people have felt shame or a need to hide their colostomy bag, so Bethany is showing there’s nothing wrong with these bags. And a number of other selfies with colostomy bags have taken off!
+ Get Your Slut-Shaming Geezers Shirts!
Remember Jonathan Mann, the singer-songwriter who created a Hobby Lobby protest song using Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s dissent (and the term “slut-shaming geezers”)? Well, he’s announced on Twitter that he now has Slut-Shaming Geezers T-shirts, and profits are being donated to Planned Parenthood. Boom.
+ Nicole Scherzinger Talks Overcoming Eating Disorder
Nicole Scherzinger gave an inspiring and emotional interview to Cosmopolitan UK about suffering from an eating disorder in her past. “It is such a horrible paralyzing disease and it was such a dark time for me,” she said. “That’s why I can empathize so much with people who have demons and voices in their heads, who aren’t nice to themselves. It robs you of living your life. But you can recover and you can get rid of it forever. I did it and that’s why it’s so important for me to share my story. I felt so alone… but I made myself so alone. You hide it from the world, you isolate yourself. But you can beat it – do not give up because you’re so special and you’re meant for such great things.”
+ Target Says No More Guns in Their Stores
Recently Chili’s and Sonic, among other places, have said that guns will no longer be allowed in their stores. Now Target, which happens to be the third biggest retailer in the country, has also banned guns from its premises. “Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create,” explained John Mulligan, Target’s interim CEO.
+ Madonna Helps Detroit
When it comes to charity, Madonna is getting back to her roots! The Michigan native has announced she’s giving major dough to help the city of Detroit, especially its young people. The Huffington Post explained she’s going to “provide funding for a new facility for the Downtown Youth Boxing Gym, which provides free after-school boxing and educational mentoring to dozens of children; buy new equipment, art and music supplies for the Detroit Achievement Academy; and help out The Empowerment Plan, a nonprofit that employs homeless women who sew garments that are distributed to the homeless.” Does giving materials to others make her all the more of a Material Girl?
