Like we pointed out with Louisville, Kentucky and Ohio State, it’s looking like this year’s NCAA Final Four teams spring from schools already rooted in a winner’s mentality. KU is no exception. (Read on to find out how you can win some signed swag from DJ Pauly D below!)
So just how does the University of Kansas keep its off-the-court spirit as fired up as its fan-fueled athletics? Let me count the ways!
Jayhawks plug in. KU’s Center for Community Outreach (CCO) makes it über-easy for students to kick back some skills to the city. Where user-friendliness is concerned, the Center’s website is almost as easy as those trusty VolunteerMatch or Do Something databases (that anyone, anywhere, Jayhawk or not, can use). Potential volunteers can pick from 14 student-run programs representing a full spectrum of community needs — from gardening to mentoring to health-related programs.
They clock in hours. According to the CCO, the University of Kansas boasts 773 volunteers who’ve clocked in 16,140 hours of volunteer time through the Center — and that’s only counting the recorded hours. Work. It. Out.
They take to the streets. B-ball fans won’t be the only ones bum-rushing the campus next week (in the event they beat the Buckeyes at Saturday’s NOLA showdown). April 2 – 7 also marks the KU’s annual Into the Streets Week, “a week of events dedicated to activism, community involvement, and volunteering.” Speakers, presenters and a full slate of service-driven events will all cater to the theme “Thinking Forward, Acting Now: Global Change Through Community Activism.”
… and they give their summer breaks. Just don’t call it a “sacrifice.” Students who participate in the Alternative Summer Break program get a lot in return, plugging into new volunteer opportunities, gaining valuable work experience, connecting with other students who would rather plant/beautify/serve/lead/research/explore than catch up on reruns all summer long.
