Let’s be real, y’all -- there’s nothing common about Common. He’s one of hip-hop’s most powerful quadruple threats: a Grammy-winning artist, blockbuster actor, memoir author and prominent activist.
The multi-talented MC has plugged animal rights for PETA, promoted HIV/AIDS awareness for the Knowing is Beautiful movement, pledged to stop using anti-gay lyrics in his music and started the Common Ground Foundation, his own nonprofit empowering underprivileged youth. Plus, he drops sick beats. The man is a force.
And now, the highly respected rapper is lending his rhymes to Haiti – the earthquake-devastated country that inspired the music video for “Sweet,”, which you can watch below.
Team Common recently visited Haiti -- which is still suffering the aftermath of a horrific quake last year – and his crew decided to honor the life-changing experience and the endurance of the proud Haitian people by filming “Sweet” from its hard-knock streets.
This week, Common hosted a premiere party for the new video, plus an exhibition of photography from their trip, in Los Angeles and all proceeds were donated to J/P HRO, a non-profit founded by Sean Penn that’s dedicated to rebuilding Haiti.
Plus, the hip-hop visionary hosted an exclusive online screening that allowed fans to pay $1 -- all of which went to J/P HRO – to get a sneak peek of the rapper spittin’ mad game from the rooftops of Haiti.
We totally commend Common’s commitment to raising Haiti’s profile with this edgy new video -- and while the song most certainly cements the socially aware MC as one bad mofo, we do wish that the lyrics and imagery gave more specific shout-outs to Haiti and its plight. What do you think of Common’s new music vid? Let us know in the poll below!
