The Avengers = Superheroes For Good

What’s better than Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, and a team of secret world-saving agents all in one movie? Can’t think of anything? Me neither. The world premiere of Marvel’s latest big screen comic book adaptation, “The Avengers,” lit up Hollywood Boulevard earlier this week and the stars rocked the red carpet like no one’s business. Sure, there was a ton of eye candy. But the excitement and anticipation for the movie totally outweighed that. That is, until Scarlett Johansson showed up, obvs.

The Hunger Games trilogy covers A LOT of heavy ground -- war, poverty, government suppression, violence in the media, not to mention Team Peeta vs. Team Gale -- and the recently released first film installment doesn’t shy away from confronting these uncomfy topics either. One issue that author Suzanne Collins doesn’t overtly tackle is racism -- but a recent Twitter trend has added it to the long list of heated HG convos.

Writing “Love Is Louder” shows a commitment to helping others and helping ourselves from bullies, loneliness, depression and all sorts of nasty stuff. The new movie “Bully” is all a buzz on the interwebs, thanks to the online support of celebrities, students, politicians and anti-bullying advocates across the board. On Tuesday, Mandy Moore promoted the highly-anticipated documentary, which hits theaters this Friday in New York and Los Angeles, and asked her followers to join her in taking a stand for all the kids that endure bullying on a daily basis. Our gold eyeliner is smeared, our fire-inspired nail polish is chipped, we’re running solely on iced coffee, but your exhilarated and exhausted correspondents have made it back from their midnight Hunger Games screenings mostly all in one piece. Here in New York, I was lucky enough to take in the film at a screening hosted by the Hob, the leading Hunger Games fan site.

It’s 3:30am and I’m all tracker-jackered on Cherry Coke, peanut butter M&Ms, popcorn, and, oh yeah, THE HUNGER GAMES. I just left a packed midnight show full of Panem fandom (there were actually 3 theatres completely crammed for opening night). A giddy sorority took up like two rows. This one #TeamPeeta girl rocked a homemade “I love The Boy With Bread” t-shirt. Toy arrows flew through the air. And there were a butt-ton of braids. Mine included.

I’ll bet most of you think of Batman with his grey suit and mask, or Superman with his dreamy smile and red cape, or something along those lines, right? For many of you, this person probably isn’t a woman you imagine, but what about Wonder Woman? Remember her? She was one of the first super hero comics back in the 1940’s before women really had a voice. The documentary, "Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroes," highlights the evolution of the Wonder Woman comic and how she changed the world, for real.
