Tom Daley, the 19-year-old Brit diving star who won a bronze medal at last summer’s Olympics — and is a total babe, BTW — posted a heartfelt YouTube video today revealing he’s currently in a relationship with a fella.
“Come spring, this year, my life changed. Massively. When I met someone and it made me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great,” Daley said into the camera. “That someone is a guy. And it did take me by surprise a little bit. It was always in the back of my head that it could happen, but it wasn’t until the spring of this year that something clicked. It felt right.”
In spite of opting for a grand reveal, Daley doesn’t want people to make a big deal out of it. “I mean, is it a big deal?” he asked, “I don’t think so … I’m still Tom. I still want to win an Olympic gold medal in Rio 2016 for Great Britain. I’m still motivated as ever to do that.” He also added that he “still fancies girls.”
Daley is one of many popular sportsmen and women to come out this year. Although sexuality has nothing to do with physical ability, in the past, the athletic world has been notoriously unfriendly to the LGBTQ community. These athletes’ bold admissions will hopefully make others, both athletes and non-athletes, feel more comfortable with who they are and who they choose to love.
