Katy Perry's single "Firework" is the empowerment anthem of the season, summing up our cultural battle cry for self-acceptance, self-expression, affirmation that Love is Louder — and reassurance that it does, in fact, get better.
(Case in point: "If you only knew what the future holds/ After a hurricane comes a rainbow.") The resourceful Ithaca College Men's Chorus, better known as Ithacappella, teamed up with their female counterparts, Premium Blend, to record an awesome cover of Perry's song with all proceeds from iTunes sales going towards The Trevor Project.
Then they took it up a notch by adding in the cute factor. Shameless. Check out this video of students from New York's PS122, who joined in with Ithacappella to support the cause. They're making a serious issue (dare I say it?) fun. And why shouldn't it be? Just because we want to tackle a problem doesn't mean we have to be glum and dreary. This is a perfect example of how all of us can find a way to use our talents and interests to creatively support any cause we care about.
Good luck getting it out of your head.
