Oh, Lorde. When asked for her opinion on Selena Gomez‘s hit song “Come & Get It,” 16-year-old “Royals” singer Lorde let the world know she’s not a fan. Not at all. Damn.

“I love pop music on a sonic level,” said Lorde, “but I’m a feminist and the theme of her song [Come & Get It] is, ‘When you’re ready come and get it from me.’ I’m sick of women being portrayed this way.” We’re happy that, at 16, Lorde isn’t ready or willing to let anybody “Come & Get It” from her. According to MTV’s It’s Your (Sex) Life, only 50% of all high school students have had sex, and 2 out of 3 who have wish they’d waited.

We can totally see where Lorde is coming from, and love that she identifies as a feminist at such a young age. However, the opposite and equally as female-empowering perspective is that grown women should be free to give and get “it” whenever they damn well please. And they should be able to do so free from judgment and shame (also known as “slut shaming”).

Selena Gomez is a 21-year-old UNICEF ambassador who has always been a positive role model to her fans. From speaking up for kids with disabilities to raising awareness for World Malaria Day, we think feminists around the world betta recognize all of the amazing work Selena does. And just how empowered she is. Just like Lorde.
