Move over, Silicon Valley, NYC is an internet powerhouse too. And a charitable one at that. This week marks the fourth year of Internet Week, a weeklong celebration of all things online. Separate events are taking place around town to recognize the city's thriving internet scene, including the 2011 Webutante Ball.
The Webutante Ball is where the cool kids in the web world go to give back...and party. Tuesday night (June 7) the ball, which brings together online celebrities to honor the internet's role in pop culture, was in full force at the NYC nightclub, Marquee. Personalities from Tumblr, Foursquare and Gawker are just a few of the celebrated Webutantes from previous years, as well as the 2010 host, Groupon.
But what's really cool? All of the proceeds from each ticket go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research. Last year the party raised $26,256 for City Harvest's Skip Lunch, Fight Hunger campaign. This year's tickets sold out in a matter of hours and Google's Sergey Brin promised to match Webutante Ball donations up to $50,000, so no worries surpassing the same amount for MJFF.
We here at MTV Act love when the internet uses it's power for good... obvi. Just look at our digital abuse campaign A THIN LINE and its 2011 Webby Award for best youth website! Can't beat social media for social good, right?
